How to Quickly Boost Your Happiness
by Jennifer

You are making a difference. Every time you send a comment or offer your insights you boost my happiness.

And these days we all need a little boost of happiness. Actually, a lot of boosts.

How to get a rush of happy

Did you know, one of the easiest ways to get a rush of happy is by giving someone a compliment? Compliments are the original 2 for 1 deal. Not only does a compliment lift someone’s spirits, it’s good for you too - body, soul, and spirit

That “happy” feeling you get from giving compliments comes from a flood of serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical produced in the brainstem, but it lives in the digestive tract. When released into your system it helps modulate cognition, motivation, mood, anxiety, and memory. In other words, it makes the heart merry.

Appreciation – the bedrock of relationships

Giving compliments also builds appreciation for one another. And appreciation is the bedrock of relationships. It helps us like, cooperate, and collaborate with one another. Showing appreciation helps regulate our emotional control. And it contributes to feeling connected to the world around us.

In fact, appreciation is the most important aspect of marital satisfaction. Studies of happily married older couples find that these people express appreciation daily. They eventually develop a culture of gratitude within their marriage.

First - It takes brain reconditioning

Unfortunately, getting in the habit of giving compliments takes some brain reconditioning. Our brains are wired to protect us at all costs. And it does this by focusing on anything and everything negative that we experience. Then our brain creates automatic responses to situations that feel familiar.

That’s why it takes conscious intentionality to recondition our brain. We must consistently look for the positive in people and our surroundings. The more you practice, the more positives you’ll see.

And then – excel in the art of giving compliments

Besides learning to see the positive, let’s master the art of giving a compliment. Here are 3 tips for making an impactful, soul sparking compliment:

  1. Compliments are more than a social nicety. They must be sincere and genuine.
  1. A meaningful compliment must be specific. Give detailed recognition. Did someone do something neatly, timely, and accurately? Perhaps they displayed a great attitude. Or pitched in without you asking. Recognize that they took extra time out of their busy day to help. You get the idea. Details are the gold nuggets.
  1. Make the compliment “other focused”. It’s not about you. Instead of saying, “I like your red dress.” say, “Your red dress is a great color on you. It highlights your hair.” (Notice there’s no “I” in the statement.)

And, don’t forget the simple, “Thank you.” Yes, I know it’s his job to take out the garbage but…

Finally - Dishing it up

February is a time to focus on heart health, love, and relationships. So, dish up some tasty compliments to feed your soul and make the world a better place.

By the way, March 1 is also World Compliment Day.
